AGA Richmond Welcomes
New Early Careers Co-chair:
Algappan
Subramanian
Aug. 4, 2010
Algappan “Al” Subramamian is the latest addition to
the AGA Richmond Board, serving as co-chair of the Early
Careers committee alongside Ann Evanko. An AGA member
since April of last year, he is currently employed in
the Division of Finance at the Department of Social
Services.
Al is married to Lakshmi Algappan and they have two
young children: a daughter, Anusha, aged three, and a
son, Ashok, eight months old.
How
has AGA Richmond helped you in your career?
AGA Richmond has helped me broaden my view on
governmental accounting/finance. As I started my career
as a government employee, I had limited opportunity to
meet other government agency employees to share
experiences and knowledge to broaden one’s horizon. AGA
is a perfect vehicle to achieve these objectives. AGA
Richmond has exposed me to a better understanding of
governmental accounting as well as to understand how
government works.
What
interests you about the Early Careers committee?
I was very active when I was a student at University
at Buffalo as an intern with University Development and
Advancement. The act of serving and thus giving back
sates the need for volunteerism. In addition to have the
opportunity to promote AGA and CGFM, I have the
opportunity to expose students to government careers as
a means of serving your country and not just as a means
of employment.
What
can you tell folks who are thinking of joining the AGA?
What are you waiting for? AGA is a steal. The wealth
of professionals that we have, coupled with the CGFM and
seminars that we provide adds additional armor to your
resume and professional experiences. It’s a natural
extension, coming from a college professional
organization, with an exposure to reality on
governmental accounting and finance.
